About James McLean:
Welcome to my blog. As you’ve probably already guessed, my name is James McLean, and I am a freelance sports journalist. I studied at Southampton Solent University from 2008-2011, when I graduated with a 2:1 in Sports Journalism.
I was born in Sunderland on 8th May, 1984 and raised in nearby Seaham (which is in Co. Durham) until I moved into Sunderland itself at the age of 22.
I relocated to Southampton in September 2008, where I lived with my lovely wife Lex, who I married on a beautiful day by the beach in Guardalavaca, Cuba on Tuesday, 16th June 2008 (I think!) We spent nine years in Southampton before returning to Seaham in May 2015, in preparation for the arrival of our first child – a beautiful little girl who we met in August of that year. She makes us both so proud every single day and is a real little character!
I began working with Hampshire CCC in late March 2009, and was originally there as a writer. Having written only one match report for the website (which can be seen here), I became an unofficial photographer for the club, having taken shots of a pre-season corporate dinner, as well as a few matches (an example of which can be seen here).
This has truly whetted my appetite for photography as well as writing, and I wish to extend a sincere “Thank You” to everyone at Hampshire CCC for the opportunity, especially to Kevin Latouf, who showed great patience and was always willing to help me in any way he could when I first started – including giving me some time for interviews for my university assignments, and Jane Cable – whose patience and warmth genuinely know no bounds.
During my second season at the club, I found myself becoming more deeply involved in the writing aspect once again, and covered many more matches as a writer as opposed to a photographer.
In July 2010 I began writing as a football writer for “A Different League”, originally as a topical writer before being offered a 7-days-a-week spot as news reporter for Arsenal. I was also one of a trio of “football experts” on the website alongside Alex Bath and Frank McCann, and collectively our weekly article is known as “A Different Opinion”.
I spent a spell as a sub-editor at ADL, as well as time working more closely with Tim Doel and Andrew Tuft offering some ideas on website layouts and graphical work, and have continued writing for the website throughout.
I have created this blog with the view of categorizing my written pieces, but I will also pipe in with something exclusively for this blog from time to time as well – practice makes perfect!
So please feel free to peruse the articles in your own time, and any feedback – whether positive or whether it is constructive criticism – is always welcomed!
Thanks for taking the time to visit my page!
